What is Net Metering?

Net Metering is a system in which solar panels are connected to a public-utility power grid and surplus power is transferred onto the grid, allowing customers to offset the cost of power drawn from the utility.

This program allows consumers to sell excess energy being generated by the panels to utility companies such as Meralco. Customers enrolled for net metering program will have their traditional meter replaced with bidirectional meter that allows the utility company to measure: how much power you consumed and how much excess power you gave back to Meralco. Based on your excess power, Meralco will buy back the excess energy and deduct the charges on your monthly bill.

Will my solar system work during brownout?

Grid tied system is designed to save on your electric bill by providing discount to the electricity consumed during daytime. During brownout when the grid is down, the grid connected to the solar must shut down automatically within a few seconds. Your inverter will shut down once power of Meralco is cut. This is included in Meralco's requirements when applying for Net Metering.

Hybrid system will work during power outages, but costs about 40% more.
